What Is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurological condition that affects the brain networks responsible for executive function and self-regulation. Individuals with ADHD—children, teens, and adults alike—often struggle with attention, organization, goal-setting, time management, emotional regulation, and impulse control.
At its core, ADHD is not a behavioral problem, but rather a result of disrupted or imbalanced brainwave activity. This means that children and adults with ADHD aren’t choosing to misbehave or be distracted—their brains are simply wired differently, making it difficult to process and respond to information in expected ways.
What Are Common ADHD Symptoms?
ADHD symptoms typically appear in childhood but can persist well into adulthood. Symptoms fall into two primary categories: inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. Some individuals may show signs from only one category, while others experience a mix of both.
Inattentive Symptoms
Difficulty paying attention to details
Making careless mistakes
Trouble organizing tasks and time
Frequently losing items
Forgetting daily responsibilities or assignments
Hyperactive Symptoms
Fidgeting or restlessness
Interrupting others or blurting out answers
Difficulty waiting for one’s turn
Talking excessively
Engaging in inappropriate running or climbing
Diagnosis is made when these symptoms are persistent, disruptive, and impair daily functioning—including school, work, and social relationships.
