Anxiety vs. Burnout: How to Tell the Difference

Kimberly Mercille • September 30, 2025

Anxiety and burnout are often confused because both can leave you feeling exhausted, unmotivated, and overwhelmed. However, they are different experiences that require different approaches to care. Understanding the differences can help you recognize what you’re going through and take the right steps toward recovery.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a persistent state of worry or fear that can be triggered by stress but often continues even when the stressor is gone. It’s your body’s natural “alarm system” working in overdrive.

Common signs of anxiety:

  • Racing thoughts or constant worry
  • Physical symptoms: rapid heartbeat, sweating, dizziness, or stomach issues
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Restlessness or feeling “on edge”
  • Sleep disturbances (trouble falling or staying asleep)

What is Burnout?

Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by prolonged stress, usually related to work, caregiving, or chronic responsibilities. Unlike anxiety, burnout is more about depletion than hyper-arousal.

Common signs of burnout:

  • Constant fatigue, even after resting
  • Emotional numbness or detachment
  • Loss of motivation or reduced performance
  • Irritability or cynicism about work/life
  • Feeling “empty” rather than worried

Can Anxiety and Burnout Overlap?

Yes. Prolonged anxiety can lead to burnout, and burnout can increase feelings of anxiety. Many people experience a mix of both, which is why it’s important to check in with yourself regularly.

How to Cope and Recover

For Anxiety:

  • Practice relaxation techniques (deep breathing, meditation, yoga)
  • Limit caffeine and stimulants
  • Challenge unhelpful thoughts through journaling or therapy
  • Seek professional help if anxiety is persistent

For Burnout:

  • Prioritize rest and recovery
  • Set boundaries with work or responsibilities
  • Reconnect with enjoyable activities and hobbies
  • Consider adjusting workload or environment
  • Reach out for support from peers or a counselor
